Colour, figure and the feel of walnut
Circassian walnut is valued for the combination of rich colour, fine grain and working qualities. Its palette can range from pale straw and light brown through reddish and deep brown tones to very dark figuring. Flowing grain, dark lines, feathered crotch and fiddleback give individual pieces their character.
Woodworkers appreciate walnut for its balance of strength, stability and elasticity, and for the way it can be cut, carved, polished and finely finished with hand tools or machinery. Its fine grain lends itself to detailed work and checkering. Natural qualities vary from piece to piece.
A tradition around the Black Sea
Circassian walnut has a long tradition in the Caucasus and around the Black Sea, including Bulgaria. Names such as English, Persian, Turkish, Italian and French walnut are also encountered in the trade; the name alone does not establish the origin or qualities of an individual blank.
Bulgarian walnut is part of our production heritage, while the catalogue also contains pieces identified by other origins. Read the description of the particular product and compare all its photographs, dimensions and seasoning information.
What the photographs reveal
We show actual pieces of wood, including dry and lightly wetted views where available. Light wetting helps reveal the colour and figure that can be less visible on a dry surface. It does not change the wood grain. Lighting, finish and the screen used to view the photograph can affect perceived colour.
